Thousands of farmers from all over Greece have taken to the streets and are strengthening the road blocks that have been set up across the country’s roads, after a meeting with the Minister of Labor Giorgos Katrougalos failed to reach yield an agreement over the controversial pension reforms.

The Minister of Labor has planned a joint press conference at 11:30 with the Minister of Agricultural Development Evangelos Apostolou and the government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili on Friday, on the government’s reform plans related to the farming sector.

The farmers however appear determined to adopt an even harder stance and are prepared to set up even more road blocks on byways. About 500 tractors have blocked the junction in Kastanies, Orestiada and a further 150 at Psathades near Didymoteicho. Traffic will be blocked off sporadically.

Meanwhile, the farmers who have gathered at Tempi decided to close off the junction between 12:00 and 14:00 and have called representatives from all the other blocks to meet up on Saturday, in order to coordinate their actions. They have also called for other sectors to join their struggle.
