The Appeal Court of Athens has found two Afghan nationals guilty of the murder of Manolis Kantaris in May 2011 and has imposed a sentence of life imprisonment, plus 23 years and a fine worth 1,000 euros.

According to the case file, the two defendants were convicted for homicide, robbery, as well as the illegal carrying and use of weapons. Following the conviction of the two, the wife of the victim and mother of four commented that the decision was ‘just’ and appropriate.

Kantaris was killed during an altercation with the two defendants over his video camera, as he was preparing to drive his pregnant wife at the time to the hospital to give birth.

The murder of Kantaris in the city center of Athens in May 2011 sparked major tension, with racist and far-right groups taking advantage of the situation to carry out brutal reprisal attacks against migrants.
