The introduction of a 23% VAT rate in all private education services is an unbearable burden for thousands of families. Because it is not just private schools, it is also tutoring, foreign language schools and conservatories where hundreds of thousands are studying, in search of a place in higher education or to acquire more skills to find a job.
Resorting to private education is a consequence of the problems in public education, which is unable to rise up to the demands of the times. This choice is not made from a few thousand financially privileged families. Tens of thousands of middle class families are making huge sacrifices to ensure the best possible studies and teaching for their children.
It is no coincidence that no other country in Europe has a similar tax on education. Despite the pressing needs, the previous government made a mistake on taxing private education, in its search for equivalent tax revenue streams. This is obviously attributed to the general perception that everything in the private sector is not only unworthy of any protection, it must also be taxed as much as possible.
Given the pressing need to fulfill the fiscal goals that have been set, it is imperative to make every effort to abolish the VAT in education or at least reduce the rate. In the end of the day we can live just find by consuming less meat, rather than deprive the youth of a better education and cognitive tools to face the challenges of life.
