Before the triple elections in May we noted that the results would provide the impetus to begin a long-term restructuring of politics.

Not two weeks have gone by since the elections ended and the reconstruction has begun.

At New Democracy they are already debating whether their party should acquire the necessary “right depth” in order to attract voters who are further down the right wing.

The pressure on Mr. Samaras from the apologists of the post-war “right is might” doctrine is increasing and will continue to increase as time goes on.

Mr. Samaras’ circle is receptive so such pressure and the offer is enticing. Now that ANEL has retreated, the Polydoras-Zois movement collapsed and Karatzaferis reappeared, New Democracy has found the path to appeal to a more right-wing audience.

The difference is that the main bulk of the far right is dominated by the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, which has established itself and is not easy to plunder. Past experiences, after all, have been bitter for New Democracy; each time New Democracy attempted a turn further down the right wing, Golden Dawn has benefited.

Mr. Samaras is aware that the particular doctrine will not provide him with the majorities that he is claiming.

After all, the Right has always been in the minority. Even in the repressive postwar years of persecutions and imprisonments, “democratic injections” were necessary to pacify the people and prevail.

Mr. Samaras would prefer a more flexible expansion, which however is not favored in the current political environment.

The truth is there is no easy choice for him. The “Sirens” of the Right are demanding he takes a Right turn, however he does not have that far to go down the Right path.

Perhaps he will have more luck if he were to ignore the calls and insist on this double-direction path, while highlighting his faction’s European outlook which was glorified after the regime changeover, rather than the divisive aspects of his party.

This will be his toughest decision and it will demand greater efforts. However, it will suit his term of the past couple years.

After all, he should not forget that became credible when he took full responsibility and stood against the many populist voices that are currently approaching him.
