Unless anything dramatic happens, today Eurostat will determine the Greek surplus for 2013 and will confirm those who insisted upon the fiscal management, that resulted to many sacrifices, hardship and effort, gave way to a virtuous cycle for our country.
This is no small feat, nor is it a given, despite the efforts to devalue and depreciate from many sides, domestic and foreign alike.
Anyone closely following Greek financial developments will know that the financial collapse did not happen automatically, but came as a result of the reckless and foolish politics that many governments implemented for consecutive years.
Truth be told, the Greek financial problem was deeply structural and as such, it could not be corrected with minor adjustments or a simple tidy-up, like some Greek politicians used to claim.
It demanded applicable measures that would set the core of expenses under control and ensure long-term revenue,
That is why most were doubtful and some still remain so.
Because they did not believe that Greek politics would facilitate such measures or would be in the position to adapt to the long-term implementation of a strict policy of controlling deficits and debts.
Greece, however, surprised everyone.
It turns out that a part of the current Greek political elite – yes, those who are constantly ridiculed and slandered – did not back down at the crucial moment, but in the contrary, it assumed responsibility and did its duty, without considering the cost.
Many will easily accuse Samaras, Venizelos, Stournaras and others, without asking themselves what they would do if they held the country’s future in their hands.
They must, however, recognize that certain people served the country and sacrificed parties and efforts.
And to a great extent, based on the Greek people’s sacrifices, they achieved everything that allows Greece the conform and luxury to demand a settlement of its debts.
That is the truth, irrespective of the electoral results.
We must accept it, without doubt or hesitation.
