Despite disagreeing with some key party members on the formation of political alliances, Fotis Kouvelis has been reelected as president of the Democratic Left party, garnering 81.21% of the vote (778 votes) at his party’s second convention that took place over the weekend.

After the results were announced, Mr. Kouvelis stated that “after the convention the party is coming out stronger from a rich debate with ideas, opinions and decisions”. The newly reelected leader further noted that his party would run independently in the upcoming European elections along with any parties willing to cooperate, responding to the criticism voiced from within his party that he shunned the “Initiative of 58”.

Mr. Kouvelis also addressed the criticism regarding the possibility of an alliance with current opposition leaders SYRIZA, explaining that “we left because we had a major disagreement and what we built, DIMAR, reflects the country’s interests. This is still the case and we will not return to SYRIZA”.
