The trial for the arson attack against the Marfin branch on Stadiou Street in May of 2010 that resulted in the death of three employees was sert to begin today, but has been adjourned for the 14th of January.
The arson attack was carried out during a demonstration in the city center against the first bailout agreement, with two – Theodoros Sipsas and Pavlos Andreev – standing trial and facing homicide and explosives-related charges.
According to the case file, Sipsas along with two others allegedly threw a petrol bomb inside the bank during the demonstration, causing the death of Angeliki Papathanasopoulou, Paraskevi Zoulia and Epaminondas Tsakalis. Andreev along with three others allegedly carried out an attack against the nearby Ianos bookstore.
Sipsas has vehemently denied the charges against him and has disputed the validity of the evidence brought against him by the Police and which lead to his prosecution.
After submitting a deposition the prosecutor and examiner disagreed as to whether there was sufficient evidence to detain him until trial. Ultimately the judicial council sided with the prosecutor, who argued no conditions for remand existed.
