The fiasco of the New Democracy elections is further proof of the major decay and decline that is endemic to our political system in recent years. When the main opposition party is unable to select and evaluate its partners in such a major party process then it is obvious that the problem is not technical, but deeply political.
It is also an indication, if not proof, of the inability and inadequacy of the party mechanism. People whose only experience are the long hours and favors in political offices climb higher up on the internal hierarchy and are later called upon to run the government. The election fiasco obviously is not their only “success”…. Similar managerial inadequacies in positions of government responsibility have led us to the situation today.
The problem in New Democracy and the political system as a whole is that party officers are distinguished not for their technical prowess or radical political positions, but for their… insightful discussions and debates over a coffee. We can see this once more in the war that broke out in the main opposition party, where rather than a meaningful conversation, they are all trying to pass on the buck.
With the government on the one hand having the rug pulled from under its feet and appealing to the opposition for support, while on the other the opposition is a state of paralysis and decay, the country is floundering in the rough seas of the crisis without a compass. How can there be a national consensus, when the two main pillars of authority, the government and opposition, are going through a crisis?
After five of the crisis and depreciation of the political system, they continue to act as if they country is not facing a survival problem. With an opposition in a deep crisis and an uncertain future and a government caught up by its contradictions and delays, we can neither hope to exit the crisis, nor hope for a return to the political and financial stability which the country so desperately needs.
