The police announced the arrest of five Romanian nationals – four of whom are priests – for the theft of a holy relic from the Holy Monastery of the Great Cave of Kalavryta.

According to the police report, the five stole the holy relic during a guided tour of the Great Cave. Four of them kept the monastery supervisor preoccupied, while the fifth – a 21-year-old priest – broke into the display case where the left hand of St. Charalambos was kept.

The group initially hid the holy relic on the tour bus and later transferred it to a remote forested area, near the road that connects the monastery to the parking area.

As soon as the theft was notice a major police operation was launched, which resulted in the arrest of the five suspects. The five suspects will soon face the Prosecutor of Kalavryta, while the relic will be returned to the father superior of the monastery.
