The Coast Guard along with the port and customs authorities of Mesologi launched a combined operation on Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in the location and confiscation of a large shipment of contraband cigarettes.
The contraband cigarettes were located in containers on board the Moldovan-flagged “SHT HUSEYIN AKIL” freighter. All eight of the ship’s crew members being placed under arrest and have been taken to the local judge for statements.
According to the official statement, the contraband cigarettes were hidden in a ten undeclared containers of pellets used for fuel. The precise number of seized goods will be announced later when the investigation and counting is complete.
