The Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will stress the need for deep-rooted changed in the European Union’s migration policy, at today’s emergency summit, in an effort to curb the unprecedented human tragedies at sea. Athens wants to seen an expansion of the legal access routes to Europe and an introduction of family reunion procedures

The main points of Greece’s migration policy reform proposals are:

  • Upgrading migration management structures and search and rescue services in the Mediterranean
  • Supporting European countries that a re receiving refugee and migration waves far beyond their capabilities, with an equal distribution of financial aid and hospitality
  • Taking diplomatic initiatives to help resolve the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Libya, as well as effectively combating jihadism

At the Summit in Luxembourg on Monday, the Alternate Minister of Migration Policy Tasia Christodoulopoulou and European Policy Nikos Hountis raised the issue of emergency financial aid for Greece, in order to manage the dramatic influx of refugees and migrants attempting to cross over to Europe.
