The bullets of the ruthless terrorists did not just wipe out the journalist family of Charlie Hebdo, they also dealt a very heavy blow to the heart of European culture. It was a blow on democratic ideals, on the foundations of a tolerant society which was constructed with so many sacrifices.
The bullets of the fanatic Muslims, who as it turns out seem to be responsible for the terrorist attack, targeted the journalists of the satirical magazine, but their aim was much broader. They fired against the Press’ freedom of expression, the open horizons and independence of thought, religious tolerance and of course, the right to satire and humor.
The most deadly terrorist attack in the history of modern France has unfortunately opened up a can of worms, from which we are still uncertain what may arise. It is not just France, but the whole of Europe is faced with an asymmetric threat, a constant danger that will dramatically influence the people’s daily life.
One may object to the tactics employed by Europe and the West in general, against the Muslims, but one cannot ignore the real danger posed by an army of determined fanatics, who will not hesitate before anything, who will not consider human live, who want to enforce their theocratic beliefs by all means necessary.
The global shock caused by the terrorist attack in Paris and the universal solidarity that was expressed do not merely reflect the intention to defend the ideas of a free and democratic society, they also reveal the fear and agony for tomorrow.
For decades Europe was the fortress of tolerance, which tried to implement a model of coexisting cultures, ideas and religions and today it is the main target of fundamentalists and extremist fanatics. With millions of migrants living in European societies, with the financial crisis ever present, with far-right and nationalist movements on the rise, there is a real danger that fundamental democratic achievements may subside.
But that is the goal of the unorthodox warfare that the jihadists have started. That is why the leaders and primarily the people of Europe must not make the mistake and face the fanatics on their terms. Against the hatred of extremists, Europe must put forth its values of democracy, freedom of expression, dignity and tolerance.
