The shocking CCTV video footage from the prison facility in Nigrita, where 42-year-old Ilie Kareli was tortured to death by prison guards, was more than enough for the Police’s internal affairs services to focus their investigation.
The CCTV video stills show Kareli being surrounded by prison guards and other prison officers, including the director. The 42-year-old was taken to a temporary holding cell at 3.47pm, where he was kept for about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
After being tortured, the stills show guards dragging him away to his cell, where he died as a result of the injuries he suffered. In this second set of pictures Kareli appears unable to walk, half-naked and abused.
So far 15 prison officers have been charged, eight of whom testified on Wednesday. Six of the officers were detained, while the other two were set free on bail.
