The responsibilities behind the choice and preservation of Mr. Baltakos in a critical government post, despite his far-right life and times, is a matter that should promptly be dealt with by the government and prime minister. Just like a response is necessary for all the accusations of other far right enclaves existing in the government.
The other issue that concerns the political system as a whole is the role of Golden Dawn. It would be a tragedy if due to a political disagreement, the neo-Nazi gang made a come back as a regulator of the political life. It is absurd to easily adopt Golden Dawn’s allegations of judicial conspiracies, staged prosecutions and unconstitutional scheming to become marginalized.
Thankfully due to the judiciary’s systematic efforts and investigations, a wealth of evidence has emerged demonstrating Golden Dawn’s criminal actions.
In any case, the majority of the opposition has not only accepted the damning evidence, it has also voted in favor of lifting the parliamentary immunity of a series of MPs. Of course, we also have a few pathetic defenders who are rushing to cover up and associate the government with the dictatorship.
The political and ideological front against the neo-Nazis must be united and clear. New Democracy must clear out the far-right remnants that persist within its ranks and the opposition must avoid using Golden Dawn’s arguments for short-term political gains. The enemies and usurpers of democracy cannot and will not become the regulators of the political life in Greece.
