The Minister of Infrastructure Michalis Chrysochoidis presented his plans for the implementation of Prime Minister Samaras’ announcement of free wireless access to the Internet.

Mr. Chrysochoidis explained that his goal is to implement the plan within 2014; at first 15,000 access points will be activated in 4,000 areas in municipalities, museums and ports. The availability will then be expanded to large areas, followed by universities, hospitals and public transport.

The ambitious plan for free Internet is estimated to cost 15 million euros, with the government making preparations for an international competition later in the year. Funding will also derive from the Digital Convergence business program.

The Minister also reported that a 280 million euro surplus from the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) will be transferred over to the State.
