The president of the European Parliament and the German social democrats party SPD Martin Schulz was impressed by Greece’s “remarkable” budget surplus and the steps taken forward, while asking for the EU to support the Greek efforts.
Mr. Shulz appeared at a social democrat convention, where he explained that Greece’s overall goal must be to achieve growth and considered discussions on the possibility of extending the loan repayment deadlines and reducing interest rates.
The German politician noted that upcoming the European elections will determine whether the Greek recovery efforts will be supported. When asked by Deutsche Welle to comment on SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras comment that Mr. Schulz wants to be Mrs. Merkel’s chosen candidate, the German politician responded that “Mr. Tsipras is clearly angry”.
The German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel noted that central theme of the election campaign must be the benefits Germany has received from the European Union and the country’s duty to provide financial support for its partners. Mr. Gabriel explained that Germany has a “historical commitment” after being readmitted in and supported by the European family after WWII.
