The Police have arrested two men in Thessaloniki on terrorism charges. The two men have been taken to Athens, where they are being questioned by the Police’scounter-terrorism Unit.
Of the two men, one has been involved in clashes with the police in Thessaloniki and two years ago refused to enlist for his compulsory military service. The police consider him to be a member of the international FAI militant group and a new offshoot of the domestic SPF group. The other man has not been involved with the Police before.
The arrests came in response to the “Phoenix” reprisals operation announced by SPF, which has targeted former members of the police and counter-terrorism units involved in the investigations on the group. The police reports that it found part of a declaration regarding a mail bomb sent to a former counter-terrorism director on the computer of one of the two men.
This was the first time the SPF group used mail bombs; it recently used bombs with fuses against the Golden Dawn offices in Aspropyrgos, a courier service in Pagrati, an ATM in Poros and a car belonging to the Nafplio Prison warden.
