The Ministry of Culture announced that archeologists have gained access to the third chamber in the Amphipolis tomb, after clearing the dirt behind the recently-uncovered caryatid statues. Unlike the previous two chambers, the third one was about half-full with dirt.
According to the announcement the archeological team is being very cautious, as there are concerns regarding the tomb’s structural integrity, due to visible distress and cracks. Support beams and other structural measures will have to be designed and implemented, before the archeologists can continue.
The security measures around the enigmatic tomb have also increased, with the Municipality of Amphipolis installing a security system and floodlights, in order to assist in the survey of the tomb’s exterior.
Samaras: “We will only listen to the excavator and her findings”
The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras commented on the various rumors about the Amphipolis tomb and stated that “we will only listen to the excavator and her findings” adding that the importance of the archeological findings extends well beyond Greece and as such “we must serious and laconic”.
