The National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce has estimated that despite the increased number of tourist arrivals this season, revenue in the tourist sector has decreased.
While there were 16.5% more tourist arrivals in the January-to-July period compared to last year, the Bank of Greece has reported that the average expenses have decreased by 10 euros (1.7%) during the same period.
According to the Confederation’s announcement the “all-inclusive” hotel deals are in part to blame, which have had a significant impact on local markets.
ESEE further argues that foreign news agencies have created a distorted impression regarding prices in Greece, which results in disappointment amongst tourists, who find that prices are not as low as they were led to believe.
Another serious reason for the drop in tourist revenue is the reduction of internal tourism, with Greek people having reduced the number of days they go on vacation and limited their expenses.
Finally, ESEE notes that in order to overcome the slump, the tourist sector must focus on developing more qualitative tourist products and offer a greater range of alternatives and services.
