Many denounce PASOK, directly holding it responsible for the crisis and the hardship of the past five years. Far fewer recognize the burden and responsibility it assumed by managing the financial crisis.

Those who are watching closely the management of the complicated crisis that burden the country and its people will recognize that the party which has dominated since the regime change has dedicated its life and soul to rescuing the country.

After a failed term of office by Mr. Papandreou, the party’s new leadership dedicated itself to saving the country and did not hesitate for a second to sacrifice what political capital it had left.

The party shrunk, its leadership was challenged, but it persisted and continues to persist, passionately standing up for its choices, without any compromises or bickering.

The speeches hat Mr. Venizelos and Mr. Simitis delivered last night on the 40th anniversary of the party are indicating and confirmation of the political consistency, as well as the political realism that informs the thoughts and actions of its leadership.

There was no wishful thinking, populist outbursts or unfulfilled promises; just responsibility, knowledge, recognition of conditions and truths about the burden, tension and time of the effort to exit the crisis.

After all that has happened, Greek society cannot endure any more delusions.

On the contrary, it needs honesty, soberness and organized plans with specific goals and pursuits.

At present, the underestimated PASOK is not mincing its words, nor is it falling prey to convenience and deceiving the people. As Mr. Simitis stated “let us remember how much the assurance that ‘there is money’ cost the country”.

Truth be told, these are conspicuous truths and nothing more. They and they alone t are the only saviors who can guarantee the country’s exit from the crisis.
