Over the past five years the country is going though a perpetual cycle of financial and political attrition, which cancels and reduces the people’s sacrifices.
Since 2008 onwards, in most cases we had extreme expressions of the financial crisis that resulted in necessary restrictive measures.
But because the crisis was extensive, what measures were taken proved to be insufficient, forcing the governments to enforce even harsher ones; this in turn resulted in the people reacting and credibility being lost, as the political crisis comes after the explosive financial crisis.
Over time, the vicious cycle of financial and political crises entrenched itself in the country, allowing a host of opportunists and populists to run wild.
Lately however, the efforts have been persistent and created the conditions to exit this perpetual cycle of attrition.
Public finances were controlled beyond all expectations, the payment balance deficit turned into a surplus, the Greek banks were able to draw funds from the international markets without any help, the financial policy’s credibility was restored to a great extent, the foreigners are not as reserved about the Greek efforts anymore and the international press has replaced the scathing criticism with ecstatic praise.
So, in such a critical phase and time for the country, as it preparing to exit the markets and “break out” of its isolation from the international markets, the Baltakos political scandal emerged.
The conspiratorial actions of the government’s general secretary in favor of Golden Dawn criminal put the Prime Minister in a difficult position for trusting an apostate, who shook the government’s balance and allowed the representatives of the neo-Nazi gang to propagate a theory of political collusion, to threaten and extort politicians and judges with the products of a crime.
However, irrespective of any political responsibilities, there is no room for changing the course of things, nor is it possible to accept the extortion of a handful of neo-Nazi criminals.
Greece does not have the luxury of taking another step back.
The Greek people’s sacrifices cannot go to waste.
The Prime Minister is obliged to take all necessary measures, to break up what far-right enclaves operate within his party and along with all the other political forces, avoid the trap set by the blackmailing neo-Nazis.
Greece has the potential and opportunity to exit the crisis – and it will exit the crisis!
