Contrary to what is being said, 2013 was a basic year for Greece. Despite most people grumbling, however much they were affected by the slew of measures and great changes taking place on a micro and macroeconomic degree, they must accept and recognize the fact that – at a huge personal, social and political cost – the country gained a new financial basis, healthier than the previous, problematic and undesirable one.

Truth be told, it is thanks to the Greek people’s sacrifices that Greece is in a better position and can stand on its own two legs without any special help from abroad and is now independent enough to negotiate with partners and creditors for the debt and other international obligations.

It is also clear that all of the above is not just a Greek myth, but the established truth which has been recognized by governments, relevant international organizations and global media outlets that can influence the global decision centers.

In that respect, along with all the hardships that came with it, 2013 was a year of reestablishment for the Greek economy. That is 2013’s great legacy for 2014. Those who ignore or eschew this basic truth are not in the position to see, or much less effectively manage the national interests in the new year.

It is essential for 2014 to recognize the achievements of 2013.

Those who focus on the consequences and do not accept the reestablishment of the country are making a strategic mistake, they do not recognize what the Greek people have suffered and ultimately – as evident by the limited reactions – accepted either as fate or necessity. Above all though, they underestimate the Greek people’s suffering and instinct.

The Greek people have already made an important choice with its stance; a European Greece, within the Eurozone, which is able and capable of actually achieving the level of wellbeing it has dreamed of, which it deserves.

By accepting these truths and this new basis we can move on to 2014.

We must defend and support the new financial basis achieved in 2013, so that the first reconstructions and restorations can take place in 2014. Only that way will 2014 be remembered in history as the start of new era of reconstruction in Greece. We just all need to believe in it…
