The latest cold front has hit Greece, with temperatures dropping by about 6 to 8 degrees across the country and snow fall in the mountainous regions in Attica.
The temperature was just bellow freezing this morning in Thessaloniki, Veria, Polygyros, Serres, Grevena and Edessa. The city of Florina appears to have been hit the hardest, with temperatures at about -4 degrees. Frost has formed on many of the provincial roads and snow chains may be necessary in certain cases.
Aside from the significant drop in temperature, the latest cold front is coupled by strong gales and storms which are expected to measure a 8 to 9 on the Beaufort Wind Force Scale, between 80 and 90 km/h. As a result ships in Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina which were destined for the Eastern Aegean Islands, the Kyklades, the Dodecanese and Crete, have been docked.
The cold weather front is expected to persist until Friday, with alternating bouts of rainfall and sleet keeping temperatures low throughout the week. Despite the relative sunshine, frost will be prominent in the western and northern areas of the countries. By Friday and Saturday there will be a minor raise in the temperature during the day.
