The Hellenic Regulatory Body of Nurses (ENE) has announced that the country’s intensive care units are severely understaffed, since the contracts of many ICU nurses have not be renewed.

ENE president Dimitris Skoutelis commented that “unfortunately our fears have been confirmed and with fewer ICU beds available, more people will die”. The regulatory body’s general secretary Aristides Daglas noted that the ICU problems are clearly attributed to the lack of nursing staff and urged the state and Health Ministry to take action.

The statements from the regulatory body came after the death of a patient at the Sotiria Hospital due to an ICU shortage.
