SYRIZA MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis has questioned the European Commission regarding recent comments made by President Jean-Claude Juncker, alleging that they constituted a brutal political intervention in Greece’s domestic affairs.
Mr. Papadimoulis explained that the recent comments made by Mr. Juncker on Austrian television, as well as reports from the Commission’s press officer regarding the upcoming Presidential election are a direct intervention of European institutions in the political domestic affairs of an EU member.
The MEP stressed that the European Commission has no right to intervene in the internal political affairs of an EU member, nor to express its political preferences. Mr. Papadimoulis questioned whether the recent comments are the Commission’s official position and if so, what procedures took place for such a decision.
In concluding, Mr. Papadimoulis maintained that “Mr. Juncker has no right to act like a modern Peurifoy” and claimed that if he had made a similar intervention in the affairs of the UK or Germany before such a critical election, he would last 24 hours in place. Mr. Papadimoulis added that denouncing such intervention is a matter of “national dignity and Democracy”.
