The Deputy Minister of Finances Christos Staikouras announced that the primary surplus during the first 8 months of 2013 was estimated to be 1.78 billion euros. Mr. Staikouras underlined that the progress of the general government’s budget implementation show that the country’s public finances are beginning to stabilize.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister revealed that revenue was better than expected in September. Specifically the income, before returning taxes, was 4.08 billion euros, increased by 313 million euros (8.3%) compared to this year’s goal and 614 million euros (17.7%) compared to last year.

Mr. Staikouras was optimistic and appeared certain that the general government’s budget will close with a primary surplus in 2013 and explained that “the estimation came from a realistic analysis of the data” and that “we have a duty to vindicate the huge sacrifices of the Greek people”.
