The of the main opposition party Antonis Samaras will attempt to bring back voters to New Democracy by banking on the government’s stance on migration and public security.

After his major defeat in January’s snap elections, it became clear that New Democracy’s financial policy alienated many traditional party supporters and voters. As such, Mr. Samaras will aim to focus his opposition’s criticism in privileged -for right-wing and conservative parties- areas, such as migration and security.

Over the past few days Mr. Samaras has emphasized the issue of lawlessness and uncertainty, in response to the ongoing occupation of the University of Athens Rectorate and the government’s handling of migration and refugees. Party officers such as Kostas Karagounis, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Yannis Plakiotakis, Nikos Dendias and Vasilis Kikilias have also scrutinized the government.

A number of New Democracy officers have pointed out that after a while, it seems that the party has managed to appear united, after an extended period of uncertainty over the party’s direction and leadership.
