The Council of Europe has demanded an in-depth investigation into the causes of the recent nautical tragedy off the coast of Samos, where 22 migrants perished.

The request was made by Dutch MP Tineke Strik, who sated that she was shocked by the incredible tragedy and urged Greek authorities to investigate. Mrs. Strik also noted that human rights campaigns have accused Greek authorities of pushing migrants back when they are found in Greek waters.

Mrs. Strik also cited Amnesty International’s data, which suggest that 188 adults and children have drowned in the Mediterranean since August 2012 and that the repeated tragedies will only end with a coordinated European effort to provide safe passage and shelter to refugees.
