The European Commission’s Vice President and Commissioner for Competition Joaquin Almunia is expected to visit Athens on Thursday, in order to participate in an event organized by the Competition Commission for the European Day of Competition.
Mr. Almunia will take the opportunity to meet with the Minister of Finances Yannis Stournaras at 11am, followed by a press conference at noon. The European Commissioner will then meet with the Minister of Growth Kostis Hatzidakis at 12.30. It is thought that state subsidies and bank recapitalization are going to be at the top of the agenda.
The head of the European Commission’s Representation in Greece Panos Karvounis commented that addressing the problems in competition and changing the financial model are essential parameters of success in the recovery efforts.
