Even though the Prime Minister has repeatedly stated that he will not call early elections, the opposition is making preparations for general elections at some point in spring, possibly in May, near the elections for European Parliament.

In anticipation of the general elections, the opposition leaders have decided to update their election program. Party leader Alexis Tsipras wants to present a more “realistic” approach, in light of the expected rise of Euro-skeptic political parties in the upcoming European elections. At the top of Mr. Tsipras’ agenda are tackling the humanitarian crisis, pushing forward necessary reforms and supporting the recovery of domestic production.

Yannis Dragasakis stressed that the cycle of austerity and recession will only break with a recovery plan similar to the Marshall Plan that was implemented in Germany and other European countries after the Second World War. The recovery can be achieved if a significant portion of the debt is erased, a growth clause is introduced to freeze interest fees when the economy is in a recession and secure non-loan funding to support growth and the economic recovery.
