A 28-year-old Iranian man set fire to himself at 6.45 on Saturday morning on the corner of Acharnon and Agiou Meletiou in the downtown Athens area of Agios Panteleimonas.

An eyewitness who contacted the police explained that he saw the man douse himself with a flammable liquid before setting fire t himself. An ambulance rushed him to the Red Cross hospitals, however it was too late. The police found a wallet next to the victim, which indicated that he was an Iranian migrant worker.

While the police investigation has not yet revealed the reasons that led to the suicide, it appears that the 28-year-old had been imprisoned for 10months on forgery charges and was on a provisional release.
