According to a report by Bloomberg, the European statistical authority Eurostat is “deeply worried” about the developments of the persecution of Andreas Georgiou, president of its Greek counterpart Elstat.

Mr. Georgiou is being persecuted over a 2009 deficit. Bloomberg maintains that the Elstat president has submitted evidence that has been approved by the stringent qualitative control of Eurostat, in order to ensure complete compliance with European legislation. Eurostat commended Greece for taking the necessary steps to improve the reliability of official divs.

At the same time though, Eurostat expressed its worries regarding the political conflict that influences not on the integrity of official statistics in the country, but also the operation of the European statistical system as a whole.
