The Appeal Court of Athens has decided to conditionally release the mother of Christos and Gerasimos Tsakalos, both of whom were convicted for their participation in the Conspiracy of Fire Cells militant group.

The Court however decided to reject the prosecutor’s recommendation for a conditional released of Gerasimos Tsakalos’ 26-year-old partner, who is also currently detained. The two women were initially arrested and detained for their alleged involvement and assistance towards the Conspiracy of Fire Cells group.

In response to the detainment of the two women, a number of prisoners have gone on a hunger strike. Aside from demanding the immediate release of the two women, the hunger strikers demand the abolition of “Type C” prison facilities and number of anti-terrorism laws.

Anarchist groups have since carried out a number of occupations and protests in support of their demands, including the Law School, the Rectorate of the University of Athens and the Sto Kokkino radio station, among others.
