The leader of the main opposition Antonis Samaras plans on “revealing” the “true plan” of the SYRIZA – Independent Greeks coalition government, which is none other than leading the country to a third bailout.
Mr. Samaras intends on making the “revelation” at tonight’s discussion in Parliament on the negotiations with the country’s creditors. New Democracy officers reported that Mr. Samaras will reflect upon the previous government’s achievement and contrast them with the outcomes of the current government’s negotiation strategy, while stressing that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has betrayed his election campaign proclamations.
Nevertheless, the sources add, Mr. Samaras will also declare his party’s commitment to any decision that will give an end to the current financial crunch, but will draw a “red line” at the possibility of any tax hikes. He will also argue that it is a matter of ethics and political order to not only submit the new agreement in Parliament for discussion, but also to be voted upon.
In his first major, post-election interview forTo Vima, Mr. Samaras stated that: “if there continues to be a budget deficit, then someone will have to finance it. If we cannot head to the markets to pay off loans that are maturing, then someone will have to lend us. Anything we can’t borrow as a ‘normal country’ from the markets, we will have to get from a necessary loan, namely a new bailout. That is why they are leading the country to a new bailout”.
The New Democracy leader will further explain that his government was in the process of eliminating the deficit and thus the need for further aid. Mr. Samaras will also claim that the markets were affected by the uncertainty of early elections and SYRIZA’s victory.
