The clash that started after Mr. Tsipras’ proclamations in Thessaloniki, beyond any political implications, offers a unique opportunity to finally have a substantial discussion about the real problems of the country and the people. That fact that SYRIZA’s leadership chose to estimate the cost of its measures is – despite the doubts – a positive development, because it allows for the discussion and debate to take place with specific data, allowing the people to determine their reliability. It is also positive that the Ministry of Finances – after the initial, general reactions – argued and countered the cost estimate and proclamations of the main opposition.
In recent years the people, especially those in suffering, have had enough with divisive conflicts that do not tackle the essence of the problems and only seek to polarize the audiences of the political parties. The huge lack of trust towards te parties and the depreciation of politics and politicians is a result of this exact demagogic clash that avoids the essence and is limited to obsessions or outdated logic and understandings.
The Greek society and economy are in need of deep changes that will allow them to escape the crisis and finally enter a path to growth. It is perfectly clear that the people are not as easily convinced by the occasional preelection promises and proclamations, because they have paid for them dearly after elections. After all that we have gone through in recent years and whether the parties like it or not, there is no room for easy and inexpensive verbal promises.
Therefore let SYRIZA’s proclamation be the excuse for the start of a substantial discussion on the different approaches, which will be conducted calmly, with arguments and proof, rather than shouting and populism. It will be in the people and the country’s interest, as well as unique opportunity for the parties and the politicians, to regain their lost credibility.
