Despite the optimism generated from the goalless draw of the first game in Liège, Panathinaikos was unable to overcome the Belgian line of defense and suffered a 2-1 loss in Athens.

The “Greens” started off well and managed to take the lead early on in the game, thanks to an own-goal (16’) by Belgian defender Arslanagic, but Standard managed to turn the game around within 6 minutes, thanks to goals by Mbombo (36’) and Mpoku (42’).

Panathinaikos put the pressure on Standard in the second half of the game, but the Belgian side’s goalkeeper Kawashima was on top form and stopped Berg and Dinas’ powerful shots.

After suffering defeat in Athens Panathinaikos says goodbye to the Champions League for this year and will prepare for the Europa League draw.
