Anonymous sources cited by Reuters argue that the European Commission is likely to defend the former head of the Greek statistics authority ELSTAT, Andreas Georgiou, who is facing serious charges of falsifying data.
Mr. Georgiou is specifically charged with inflating the Greek budget deficit during his tenure in 2009, which in turn paved the way for the introduction of the bailouts in Greece.
