The absence of PASOK president Fofi Gennimata from the vote on the controversial civil partnership bill on Tuesday has raised questions, given that her party had submitted a proposal in 2013 and she personally called for a roll call vote.

According to party sources, Mrs. Gennimata was feeling under the weather and as such left Parliament on the night of the critical bill. Associates of Mrs. Gennimata claimed that nobody expected her absence to raise any questions, due to the stance of PASOK on the matter.

In a tweet on Wednesday Mrs. Gennimata lashed out against the coalition government, claiming that her party was ‘decisive’ in improving human rights in Greece. She also argued that PM Alexis Tsipras must align himself “against the darkness”, adding that there can be no alliance “with extremists and homophobes”.
