Police officers in Larissa responding to complaints of a crying child on Saturday were shocked to find that a six-year-old girl had been left alone in an apartment with appalling living conditions.

According to the police report, the living conditions in the apartment were unacceptable, noting that there were food scraps, intense smells, dirt and cockroaches all over. The 32-year-old mother of the girl faced serious financial problems and was unable to cover her child’s needs via benefits. As such, she found a job in a factory and was forced to leave her child unattended.

The child does not appear to have been harmed, but was taken to the pediatric clinic at the General Hospital of Larissa as a precaution. The 6-year-old was temporarily taken to an institution on Tuesday, until the mother can improve her living conditions and avoid losing custody of her daughter.
