The decision of Mr. Tsipras to propose someone from an opposing political camp candidate for the Presidency may not have caused any excitement amongst certain members of his parliamentary group, but it is a first indication of an essential consensus.
In a period where the country faces huge problems and a critical negotiation with Europe, the consensus and coordination of political forces is more important than ever.
The political polarization that preceded, on occasion of the election of a new President, should have been defused as soon as possible.
The main opposition’s acceptance of the Pavlopoulos candidacy contributes towards this. The President may not have any significant powers, but he symbolizes the will of the political forces to work for the common interest.
Despite the objections one may have for Mr. Pavlopoulos’ political stance so far, he has the ability and potential to express the common will for national coordination, following in the steps of previous Presidents who assumed the role of senior state official.
It also positive on another lever that the Prime Minister responded to the request of political leaders to be informed immediately and responsibly about the progress of negotiations with our European partners.
The country has reached a crucial crossroad and does not have the luxury of pointless clashes and internal conflicts. It is time that the national interest of remaining in the Eurozone prevails. Everything else can follow…
