The deadlock at last night’s Eurogroup is a turning point regarding the choices available to the Greek government. The intransigent attitude of our partners, who adamantly insist upon the extension of the current program, leads Mr. Tsipras and his government to make crucial decisions. The alliances which the Prime Minister was seeking and trying to form in the past few days turned out to be unattainable in practice.

Unfortunately for us the popular gathers were not able to raise awareness amongst the Eurozone leaders, so that they may be more open to the Greek demands.

The negotiations are clearly at an absolutely critical point and the available time is very tight. It is time for the Prime Minister to take some brave decisions. At present it is of utmost importance to maintain our country’s presence in the Eurozone and the euro. Personal and political costs come second, after the national interest. It is the time when a leader takes everything into account in order to plot the most beneficial course for the country, even if that choice will clash with his ideological principles or part of public opinion.

However understandable Mr. Tsipras’ disappointment may be, for not being able to change the dominant relations in Europe in the little time he had, what must now be secured is the country’s European path. Any other choice will have consequences that are much more destructive for the country and society than the ones he is trying to rectify with the negotiations.

This choice, of the European path, must be supported by all political forces, irrespective of any political interests. It is high time that everyone, starting with the Prime Minister of course, demonstrates that what counts, above all, are the interests of the country and the people.
