The president of PASOK Evangelos Venizelos and his officers are hard at work in preparation of the upcoming elections, in light of the recent foundation of a new party by former party leader and PM Giorgos Papandreou.

This development prompted a fierce official response, with the junior government partner claiming that the initiative will only fragment the greater center left faction. Mr. Venizelos is currently in talks with a number of veteran officers, in hopes of expanding his party influence and avoid a schism.

The former PASOK minister Giorgos Floridis is said to seriously be considering his return to the party, while Mr. Venizelos is said to be in talks with Takis Rigas, Pantelis Kapsis and Kyriakos Pierrakakis. The former Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou has not yet decided what she will do and is talks with both PASOK and the Movement of Democrats Socialists.

Meanwhile, PASOK has proposed a plan for the formation of a national unity government, where all democratic parties with a European perspective may participate, meaning both New Democracy and SYRIZA.
