The former Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou appears to be determined to form a new party, which he plans on formally announcing in the next few days following the critical Presidential election.

Prominent PASOK officer Dimitris Reppas is rumored to have an active role helping Mr. Papandreou prepare the ballots and candidates for his new party.

Efforts to dissuade the former PM from carrying out this move have so far failed, with the junior government partner PASOK concerned over the repercussions it may have in the snap elections to follow.

PASOK veterans such as Kostas Laliotis and Fofi Gennimata are said to be amongst those who have tried to dissuade Mr. Papandreou, as there are concerns that the division amongst PASOK voters will not benefit either side.
