The National Education Council is scheduled to convene on Monday in order to discuss and determine the number of student admissions. One of the central questions is whether next year there will be more or less student admissions.
Until recent the universities would receive almost double the amount of students it requested, putting a strain on finances and structures. This year the universities face even problems due to the reduced budgets and deregulation of student transfers.
The Ministry of Education estimates that the universities will take into consideration their social role and not reduce the number of student admissions. However, with many universities citing serious financial problems, a reduction of student admission is not out of the question.
The Rector of the University of Patra Venetsana Kyriazopoulou told thebest.gr that “we are unable to make do with the budget provided by the Ministry”. The university budgets have been slashed by about 50% compared to last year, with many institutions forced to submit false budgets, which are impossible to implement.
