The Executive Committee of the Democratic Left (DIMAR) decided to suspend discussions with other political parties, following a dramatic session on Thursday evening.

According to a report in Ta Nea, the suspension of discussions was proposed by party leader Fotis Kouvelis and was supported by the party’s Left Network, while a number of former Kouvelis allies voted against it.

At first the party’s leadership asked for a suspension of the political negotiations with PASOK, however a number of high-ranking officers – including Thanasis Theoharopoulos, Dimitris Hatzisokratis, Theodoros Margaritis and Eugenia Bournova – disagreed.

The group then asked Mr. Kouvelis to clarify why he intended to suspend discussions with PASOK, but not SYRIZA, with the DIMAR president being unable to provide adequate explanations.

Following some tense exchanges and with the possibility of coming to a deadlock, Mr. Kouvelis decided to amend his initial proposal to suspend talks with all parties.
