The Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani has requested from the Jury Court of Patra a copy of the verdict of the Manolada migrant worker shootings case.

The court ruling has caused major controversy in Greece and the Supreme Court prosecutor will examine whether the decision must be repealed.

The Patra court found the strawberry business owner and one of his foreman innocent; while the other two foremen, who were convicted for causing serious bodily harm, have had their sentences suspended until their appeal hearing.

The court ruling also caused fierce reactions from the opposition parties and PASOK. SYRIZA condemned the Patra court ruling as “shameful and infuriating” arguing that it will set a precedent for ever greater “savage, inhuman and racist exploitation of rural laborers”.

The Communist Party commented that the court ruling “in every sense, is provocative for the entire working class” and called for Greek and foreign workers to unite against the policy of exploitation and claim their rights.

Coalition government partner PASOK noted that the impression of the court ruling is that justice has not been served and opined that the State must take measures to improve the working and living conditions of seasonal rural laborers.
