The Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change announced that the geophysical research vessel “Nordic Explorer” of the Norwegian PGS company has completed its search for hydrocarbons in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete. The vessel covered 12,431 kilometers and collected a wealth of data.
The Minister Evangelos Livieratos explained that the “successful completion of the first phase, collecting data, is extremely important, due to the great value the real measurement data will have, in determining the real, rather than hypothetical, reserves of hydrocarbons”.
The search for hydrocarbons in the Greek seas has sparked a series of debates regarding their existence or not, as well as the extent to which such reserves could improve the financial future of the country. Defining an Exclusive Economic Zone is also becoming a paramount issue, in light of the Greek government’s note verbal at the UN over Turkish research in Greek waters.
