After the dramatic defeat to Spain earlier in the week, the Greek national team had to reorganize for the match against Latvia for the 5th place in the tournament. After defeating Latvia 97-90, the Greek team finished 5th and secured a spot in the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The disappointment amongst the Greek players was evident, with the Latvian team even managing a 17-point lead at one point in the game. However, Fotis Katsikaris’ team managed an impressive comeback in the final quarter with Yannis Bourousis, Kostas Sloukas and Vasilis Spanoulis took charge of the game.

This game was also the final cap for Vasilis Spanoulis, who announced that he will retire from the national team. Spanoulis first played for the junior team of Greece at the FIBA Europe U18 championship in 2000 and joined the senior team for he 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
