The Vice President of Parliament and SYRIZA’s parliamentary spokesman Alexis Mitropoulos asserted that the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras must stay on, even if the people vote ‘yes’ in Sunday’s referendum, as it would be inconceivable for him to desert the Greek people in their toughest decision.

He explained that Mr. Tsipras must continue as Prime Minister even in such a case, in order to protect the people, who will have voted for a hard package of measures. Should the people vote ‘no’, he added, then the Prime Minister will enter negotiations without the hard package of measures.

Mr. Mitropoulos recognized that the present situation should have been avoided, noting that the agreement of 20 February and the pentameric meeting in Berlin were perhaps better opportunities to strengthen Greece’s bargaining position.

Finally, the SYRIZA MP noted that Mr. Tsipras’ efforts are to keep Greece within the Eurozone and European Union.
