The German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed once again that Greece belongs in the Eurozone, but noted that the ball is in the Greek side’s court.

Mrs. Merkel appeared before the German Parliament, ahead of the EU summit next week, arguing that Germany’s efforts aim to keep Greece in the Eurozone, so that the Greek people can have the prospects of a better future. She reported that Greece was on the right path, but did not complete its journey because reforms were suspended.

According to the German Chancellor, an agreement with the three institutions is still possible, provided that the Greek political leadership demonstrates the necessary political will. She added that this is the necessary basis for any future decisions, at the Eurogroup and German Parliament. Furthermore, Mrs. Merkel commented that solidarity goes hand-in-hand with responsibility and efforts.

While Mrs. Merkel insisted upon the Greece maintaining its membership in the single currency zone, at no point in her speech did she allude that any concessions could be made in favor of Greece.
